Gran Selezione 2016 91 DEC Feb19

The Mazzei family’s preference is for ageing in small French barrels, however as their vines get older, the estate is using fewer barriques in favour of larger tonneaux. A blend of the best lots, this Gran Selezione sees a fairly hefty 60% new oak. It’s amply endowed with notes of cedar, cherry bark, baking spice and dried mint. The fruit is sweet and ripe, though not overly voluptuous or rich. Both the wood and tannins are polished. Well-executed. Drinking Window 2020 – 2030. – M.M.
