Touriga Nacional,Tinta Roriz,Alfrocheiro,Jaen
The 2018 Tinto (in Portugal, it is bottled with the "A Descoberta" label as a brand), is an unoaked blend of 40% Touriga Nacional and 30% each of Jaen and Alfrocheiro, unoaked and coming in at 13.7% alcohol. Another fine value, this elegant wine has the purity you would expect but also very good fruit, finesse and a spicy, fresh demeanor. The tannins are ripe, but this is still firm on the precise finish. Some low-priced wines are simply fruity concoctions with no structure, but this is better built than that. To this imperfect puzzle of different sun exposures, plots and grape varieties that completes itself in just 60 hectares.
An attractive and lifted nose with a hint of savouriness, but a serious core of dark cherry. The palate is initially supple with dark cherry again and dried herbs, its fleshy in acidity, and spicy too, with but tannins so initially fine it's surprising to feel them build up and up, leading to a deliciously earthy, granite mineral finish. Rock n' roll.
