This wine represents a new chapter for Mazzei’s Zisola estate and for Sicily. Very few producers on the island make a pure expression of Petit Verdot. The 2015 Effe Emme shows dark fruit intensity with subtle background notes of chalk and crushed mineral. Alberello vines are planted in heavily limestone-rich soils. This is a powerful, full-bodied red to pair with tri-tip or barbecued steak. The wine is juicy, succulent and firmly structured. – M.L.
