A blend of Nero d’Avola and Nocera (aged in barrique for 12 months), the 2016 Mamertino is a very interesting new wine from Planeta’s property at the tip of the tiny Milazzo peninsula in the northern part of Sicily. This is a mid-weight red with a very lively and buoyant bouquet that shows hints of candied cherry, rose hip and fresh plum. It’s hard not to like the freshness and vitality you get here. The mouthfeel is lean and crisp. – ML
