JOMA by Johanna Markowitsch

Johanna is the daughter of well renowned winemaker - Gerhard Markowitsch.
Growing up in Carnuntum she now represents her own creation her JOMA line – natural, independent, light-hearted and fun.
The second smallest wine-growing region in Austria. Because it is so close to the Burgenland border, the area is ideal for growing red wine. Due to the Danube in the north, the climate is still cool and thus allows white varieties to sprout. “We are practically the cooler Burgenland. As far as red wine is concerned, we are even the coolest wine-growing region in Austria”.

History

CARNUNTUM is impossible to pigeonhole. Among the wine regions that make up Niederösterreich, we enjoy a special position because of our arid climate, while the cooling influence of the Danube River meadows provides one significant difference between our region and nearby Burgenland.

The so-called ‘Brucker Gap’ opens a passageway between the Alps (the Leitha Range) and the Carpathian Mountains (the Hainburger Hills). Masses of air flow constantly through this gateway headed toward the Danube River Valley. They pass over the rolling hills, quickly drying out the modest rainfall while they push away the Atlantic rains coming out of the west.

Terroir

The SINGLE VINEYARDS are located in the two villages Göttlesbrunn and Höflein. Our philosophy is to highlight the individual differences of our single vineyards. The goal is to bring this unique spot of soil/earth into the bottle. The encounter with nature. Organic farming. The art of admitting something, that no technique, no matter how refined, is able to produce.

People

THE VINEYARDS OF CARNUNTUM are not spread out upon precipitous slopes or nestled in dramatic geologic formations, but rather set in the rolling hills that the primordial sea and the meandering Danube formed millions of years ago. Each one of these hills has its own unique geologic history, its own particular exposition and thus its own distinctive flavour. Here in Carnuntum, for many years we have focussed our efforts upon producing cuvées, marrying wines from various soils and different grape varieties into complex works of viticultural art. But currently there is a new process underway in our region: rethinking this, considering how we might articulate the distinctive characters of the individual sites, and allow these to express themselves in a pure fashion.
